What Is an NRI Certificate?
An NRI Certificate is an official document issued by Indian Consulates abroad that confirms your Non-Resident Indian (NRI) status. This certificate is often required when applying for:
-
Admissions under the NRI quota in Indian universities
-
Various legal, financial, and immigration-related purposes
Who Can Apply?
-
Only Indian Passport holders are eligible to receive the NRI Certificate.
-
However, OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders can be issued a certificate specifically for educational benefits.
Eligibility for Educational Benefits Under NRI Quota
You can apply under the NRI quota if you are:
-

-

Note: A ward must be a minor under the bonafide guardianship of an NRI. Legal proof of guardianship and an affidavit must be submitted. Extended relatives (like uncles, aunts, or grandparents) do not qualify unless proper legal documentation is provided.
